The residence is a study in contrasts: within vernacular forms a cluster of simple modern buildings creates a series of dynamic spaces, capturing views of a dramatic natural setting.

In response to a long narrow site, the house’s mass was fragmented to create intimate spaces and unique juxtapositions between the volumes. Aesthetic restrictions, imposed through a covenant requiring the building to appear traditional, inspired the project’s design, which subverts traditional massing with modern insertions and detailing. The buildings are clad in white-painted cedar rain-screen with cedar shingled roof, traditional materials detailed as an abstract skin. The external surfaces are interrupted by modern, large scale aluminum curtain walls and windows. These interventions suggest the structurally expressive details within: tensile stainless steel tie rods, cable-suspended stairs and floating bridges.
